The Yok

Originally hailing from Perth, Melbourne based Graffiti artist “The Yok” talks about the Perth Graffiti scene and what he is up to lately…

Hi Yok. Tell us a bit about what you have been up to lately.
Have been working on a lot on painting lots of canvases for a show in Melbourne at the Schwipe Gallery. And some pieces for a secret installation.

How would you describe the Perth Graffiti scene?
Sporadic. pockets of great talent with large parts of just general tags.

Your work holds to a strong Gargoyle theme..tell me a little about this.
I love the idea behind gargoyles. They were put on walls as decoration, similar to what i do.

How do you address the creative process, how do you go about formulating your ideas for your work?
I guess i just keep going until something pops off the page that i’m happy with. i don’t have system, just keep going till i get it right i guess.

What/who is inspiring you at the moment?
at the moment travel getting out of the city going to the beach is inspiring me.
My girlfriend s new works and her drive has been an inspiration
Seeing my friends be successful and doing amazing work always pushes me.

What do you love about Australia?
The beach, the wide open space, the constant sunshine (in Perth anyway). The mixed cultures (in Melbourne). And BBQ’s.

What would you change about Australia?
Nothing it would be Australia if i meddled with it. it would be some weird world of gargoyles.
