What have you been up to lately?
I shot a feature for Marie Claire last week entitled “Perfection Deception” like most of the work I shoot it was a conceptual image depicting the trap that many woman are apt to fall into i.e.: thinking they have it all, just before they realize that they are killing themselves trying to be everything to everyone and looking great on the outside but feeling overwhelmed and miserable inside.
It is visually very pristine, of course. It is an all white set shot with high key lighting and most of the elements in the image are white as well.
It has a very contemporary feel , like most of my imagery I subscribe to a crisp, bold and clean look. I worked closely with Wil, a stylist, on selecting the right elements in the picture. I am a bit pedantic with this side of my work. Many occasions I style and source my elements on my own.
Every little thing in the picture tells a story and also reveals a portrayal of what and who I am as well. It suggests my aesthetic sense, style and level of delight.

How did you get into photography?
Firstly, I am a painter. I began painting with oil and acrylic at the age of 7. Always wanted to be an artist when I grew up. My father was a musician and composer. We (my 5 brothers and sisters) traveled around the US and Canada in his airplane as we were a singing and dancing family. That is when the camera became an integral part of documenting my day to day life. It really wasn’t about the camera at all, it was just a tool that was doing the job of capturing the essence of the moment in time. I wasn’t reading F stops until later.

Do you have a favourite style of photography? What makes you excited?
No, I cant say I absolutely adore one style of photography explicitly as I am normally more interested in content and if the image is successful in its rendering of whatever it is trying to convey. I like to get right to the point…and that gets me excited , when I have “no fear” of expressing myself. I’m not very understated, soft and marshmallow when it comes to making images, that’s not to say that it cant be simple. I love a beautiful light rendering the detail of an image.

You do a lot of advertising work, especially for beauty and cosmetics. Where do the concepts come from and how is it to work with agencies?
I recently shot an “Olay” ad for Saatchi and Saatchi. I really think about my product and what would compliment it and make an environment for it visually. I try to ground it and give it a foundation. My clients come to me because that is what I do and they are very open to my ideas.

Where do you find inspiration?
From a very introspective place in my brain. I go to dream world and just use my imagination to create a state of sublimity.

What advice would you have to younger photographers entering the industry?
Don’t stop exploring the possibilities, if you don’t have a level of patience and perseverance to the craft, it will show in your work.
