Chris Ireland Photography – Breathe
It is a tragic fact that thousands of Australians die each year from diseases caused by inhaling asbestos fibres.
In a cruel irony, the very strength and resilience of the asbestos fibre, once hailed as a “wonder fibre”, is the undoing of many who breathe it in. Once it has embedded in a person’s lung, the tiny fibre may give rise to cancers and lung disease which eventually rob the patient of the very capacity to draw breath.
This exhibition, simply titled Breathe, is dedicated to those widows united by that loss, and to their men who have gone.
The Exhibition opened last Friday, you can check it out at the Australian Centre for photography. Friday 17 July to Saturday 22 August.

This exhibition is well worth seeing. It takes a relevant social issue and captures the individual story of each widow without deliberately taking advantage of their sadness. At the same time it makes the viewer acutely aware of the damage caused by asbestos, each widow telling a different story about how it has affected her life. The photographer has managed to tell each story differently.
Emily Radburn, July 19th, 2009 at 7:20 pmEven though the works are emotional, they capture the women intimately in their everyday environment, showing that life goes on. The viewer may find the images uplifting, as they offer a sense of realness and stoicism in the women.
It is clear that the photographer is both sensitive and empathetic. His woks are engaging and relevant. Well worth a look.
Hi Emily,
Thanks for your insightful analysis of my show!
I have tried hard not to simply produce images that objectify grief.
This is my debut exhibition and I’m thrilled at the support I have received.
Thanks to the guys behind this sight for adding my work to their forum!
Chris
