Hamish McDougall from Bannerblog

Hamish McDougall is a freelance digital designer currently working in London. We spoke to the European correspondent of the Australian site Bannerblog.

Hi Hamish. What have you been up to lately?
Lately I have been freelancing in london and traveling around Europe checking out all the good summer spots and some of the local advertising. I love the old type you can see in weird and wonderful places on shops and building around europe. Not to mention some of the funny type combinations you get on restaurant menus.

How did you first get involved with Bannerblog?
Back in the early days bannerblog was a blog that Ashley from Soap Creative [AU] and Ashadi from RMG Connect [AU] started. They were looking to extend the reach and expand the the blog to a more global audience. I came on as one of there European editors.

How would you rate the quality of online advertising in the different regions?
The great thing about the internet is; its truly global. But saying that I still believe places like North America, England and Brazil are turning out the best online advertising work.

In your view, what makes a piece of online advertising successful?
Concept, interaction, and execution. I believe that you have to use the medium strengths (interaction, non liner information flow) if you want to create a good online ad. And at the end of the day just like all other types of advertising the design has to fit the overall message of the advertisement.

What have been some of your favourite pieces of recent work on the site?
There is so much good work out there, but here are some of my favorites.
